A legacy of community service and sustainable agriculture
Mission Farm has a rich history of sharing food, dating back to the 18th century. This legacy of community service and sustainable agriculture continues to shape our mission today.
Historical roots
In 1764, Josiah Wood established the first homestead in what was then known as the Sherburne Valley (now Killington). In 1895, his youngest daughter, Elizabeth Wood Clement, made a significant decision that would impact generations to come. She deeded the 180-acre property to the Episcopal Church with a clear stipulation: the land was to serve as a resource for the valley's isolated population. This act of generosity laid the foundation for Mission Farm's enduring commitment to community support and sustainable food production.
Nurturing food entrepreneurs
Today, The Kitchen at Mission Farm serves as a vibrant incubator space for food artisans with a vision for social impact. This hub of innovation provides affordable access to a commercial kitchen, fostering a supportive environment where small businesses can flourish. Here, food entrepreneurs form collaborative cohorts, sharing knowledge and resources as they develop products that not only sustain their businesses but also benefit the community.
A holistic approach to community and environment
Mission Farm's impact extends beyond food production. We strive to create meaningful connections between people and the land, fostering a deeper understanding of the intricate systems that support life and agriculture. We work with local farmers and seek ways to foster regenerative farming on our own property.
By focusing on the interconnectedness of our neighbors and the natural world, Mission Farm continues to honor its historical legacy while addressing the contemporary challenges of food security, environmental stewardship, and community resilience.
